Democrats capitalized on President Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity Tuesday, flipping control of both the House and Senate in a resounding and historic midterm victory, CNN’s Decision Desk projects.
Only twice in the last 50 years had control of both chambers changed in the same cycle.
The exact sizes of the Democrats’ majorities are still yet to be determined as the final election results are counted. But Democrats appear set to have some room for error in both chambers.
History was also made in some gubernatorial races on Tuesday. Georgia Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms will become the first Black female governor in US history, CNN projects. US Rep. Byron Donalds, a Republican, is projected to become the first Black governor of Florida. And Gina Hinojosa is projected to become the first Latina governor of Texas.
