On October 29, the fan fiction site Archive of Our Own, more commonly known as AO3, unexpectedly went offline. Would-be visitors landed on a page saying it was shut down for maintenance, and a message on the AO3 Tumblr page said the work would take at least 12 hours — longer than routine upkeep but not necessarily cause for alarm. An update posted hours after that estimated that service restoration to the site would instead take two weeks, or potentially up to four.
