Brazil's Left-wing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has defied polls to win a fourth term in office.

With almost 99 per cent of votes counted, the 80-year-old came from behind to secure 51.75 per cent of the vote in the run-off against his hard-Right opponent Flávio Bolsonaro, a margin of about 4.4 million votes.

But Mr Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, refused to concede and said he would ask for the "inexplicable" result to be annulled.
